Healing crises is a blessing in disguise but many don’t know and they stop their therapy when experiencing it. Nature is the best healer but you have to understand her to get what you want, healing.
In naturopathic medicine, there is something called “Healing crises” and you must go through that phase before you get well. It is the period when your body moves out lots of toxins for elimination beyond what your body can handle. The more toxic you are, or the more chronic your dis-ease, the more severe the healing crises.
This happens because the natural therapy has eliminated all the root causes and created an environment in your body where toxins and bad microbes can’t survive or thrive.
Your whole body begins to work to eliminate all these toxins released, especially your organs of elimination which are the colon, liver, lungs, kidneys, and skin.
This process is monumental in natural healing and should not be stopped or suppressed. During this process, old, dirty, and toxin-filled cells are replaced with new, clean, and healthy cells.
Suppressing or stopping healing crises can lead to health crises. However, enduring this painful and “uncertain” moment can be life-changing and very rewarding.
You have to sit in the fire and go through the pain but afterward, you will feel better and your condition will improve. Even during healing crises, you will feel better on the inside.
So, just sit in the fire and know that you won’t be burnt. That fire will help heal and correct many abnormalities in your body.
What Happens During Healing Crises
Healing crises is also known as “Herxheimer reaction”, “re-tracing”, “detox symptoms”, “Healing reactions”, and “dumping”.
In this process, your body expels toxins and a large scale die-off of bacteria at a faster rate than it can dispose of. When this is happening, your symptoms temporarily increases and they can be mild or severe.
At this stage, you feel worst and may at this point stop the treatment/therapy. But in reality, these are signs that the treatment is working and you don’t have to discontinue treatment or suppress the healing crises.
Your body is simply going through a process of cleaning itself, removing years of suppressed toxins, impurities, and imbalances. If you stop or suppress this, you might run into a health crisis later.
Healing crises is a temporal condition and it can last for a few minutes to at least a month and some weeks. The longer your healing crises, the more toxic or chronic your condition.
If you are healing from a chronic disease, the healing crises will mimic the disease itself. Sometimes, the discomfort during the healing crises can be more than when you were developing the chronic disease.
This usually comes after you’ve felt your very best and the symptoms you will experience happen in the reverse order of when the body was exposed to the cause of the disease originally.
In the case of a chronic dis-ease, you might go through smaller crises before the final one but in all, just be relaxed and know that lots of toxins are being dumped into the bloodstream for elimination.
Why Must The Body Go Through A Healing Crisis To Get Well?
Natural therapies induce detoxification, especially that of the liver, years of toxins and drug residues are released, hence a cleansing reaction.
A program like juice fasting can cause a rapid breakdown of fat cells (another storehouse of toxins) thereby triggering a healing response as toxins are removed from there and dumped into the bloodstream.
Before the body gets well, it must retrace its symptoms.
Signs and Symptoms of Healing Crises
In healing crises, the body will bring back past symptoms in the order that the body is capable of handling at a time. Even the symptoms you’ve forgotten that happened in the past will resurface during a healing crisis.
The symptoms experienced depend on the individual, how severe or chronic the condition is, and the condition being treated. There is a limitless list of healing crises but the common ones are:
- Increased muscle and joint pains
- Fluctuation in body temperatures
- Nausea and vomiting
- Extreme fatigue or restlessness
- Cramps and severe headache, caused by the dumping of toxins in the bloodstream
- Pains and aches
- Sinus congestion
- Fever and chills
- Arthritic flair up
- Urinary tract discharge and frequent urination
- Low blood pressure
- Rashes, hives, boils, and skin eruptions
- Cold and flu-like symptoms
- Strong emotions like anger, fear, sadness, despair, worry, anxiety, etc.
- Suppressed memories arise
- Mood swings and anxiety
- New phobias developed
- Itchy skin and rashes
- Body pains
- A flare-up of old conditions and symptoms

The Sequence of Natural Healing
In natural medicine, healing takes place in the following order:
- Initial improvement
- Temporary aggravation
- Stabilized improvement
How to Know If It’s Not Healing Crises
You’ve already seen from above the symptoms of healing crises. But to make things clearer, a healing crisis MUST fall into one or more of these categories:
- Fatigue and lethargy
- A feeling as if you might be coming down with something
- The appearance of flu-like symptoms
- A return of specific recent symptoms
- A re-occurrence of much older symptoms
Also, healing crises is short unless it is a chronic condition being treated and a more strenuous healing protocol was used (for example fasting).
And don’t forget, the symptoms of healing crises are the symptoms associated with the dis-ease being treated. This is why healing crises can be alarming and confusing to many people.
So you have to understand that this is a beneficial process and a sign that your body is healing. This will help you maintain a positive attitude despite the pains and discomfort.
If you are experiencing a true healing crisis, you will feel very good on the inside. You will also have an intuitive knowledge that you are not getting worse but better.
If the symptoms do not fall into any of the categories above, then it’s not a healing crisis but a health crisis. Maybe you are not sticking to your diet, or you’re introducing what shouldn’t be into your body, or you might be reacting to the herbs used.
It is not also healing crises if the patient starts reacting immediately after treatment commences. There has to be a period of feeling better first, before the healing crises come temporary and then stabilized improvement.
If during treatment, you had an accident either through a fall or motor accident, which is not a healing crisis. These situations that are not healing crises should not be handled as one if not, you will run into a health crisis.
So, with these tips and explanations, I hope you will be patient enough to endure and also trust the process. When you do this, you will get the healing you so much desire.
